Economic crisis in the South and periodic recession in the North have cast a long shadow over the lives of millions of women throughout the 1 980s. This book looks at the serious consequences for them - on their health, their children, their nutrition, as well as in terms of unemployment, homelessness, and illiteracy. The finance and trade policies which have led to the debt crisis are explained, as are the effects of economic adjustment measures upon the poor in both the developing and industrialised countries. In addition to a description of the international, governmental and NGO policies and programmes designed to mitigate these effects, it also offers detailed examples from Ghana, Jamaica, Mexico, the Philippines and Zambia of how women themselves are confronting these problems. JEANNE VICKERS first became involved with the United Nations when she joined the UN Relief and Rehabilitation Administration in 1946 to work with refugees in post-war Germany. Her subsequent posts have included working for UNICEF as its Development Education Officer. For some years she chaired the Joint UN/NGO Group on Women and Development, which is responsible for this series, and she remains actively involved in its work. Size: 8vo.
