He was however not a hoarder and his generosity first of all gifted his collection to the City of Glasgow and endowed a fund to build a gallery to house it. Having acted as trustee to the National Gallery of Scotland and then to the English equivalent which eventually became the Tate Gallery, he was fully aware that works of art and artefacts of beauty are only of value if available for general viewing. The intention of this Guide is to take visitors round the galleries in a helpful and constructive way. Ably written by the Keeper of the Collection.
