Softcover. Etat : Gut. Fully Illustrated. Scottish Steam Today traces the history of steam power from its first practical application by Thomas Newcomen in 1712 to its present role in generating electricity across the land. As the steam industry reached a peak during the 19th century, Scotland flourished. Activity on the Clyde intensified following the successful launch of The Comet and the national dress became not so much the kilt as the boiler suit. Railway tracks were laid, linking urban and rural parts whilst mines, miles and factories were made safer and more economic by the intervention of steam. But by the 1920s more efficient and less conspicuous forms of power came into being, in the guise of electric and diesel motors. Unable to compete, steam power, particularly in transport, went into decline. ? Condition: With slight signs of use. Good according to age. Zustand: Mit leichten Gebrauchsspuren. Altersgemäß gut.
