This edition, like its companions Thucydides ll and IV, is intended primarily for undergraduates and candidates taking A-level examinations. It will also be useful to students who are approaching a book of Thucydides for the first time, or studying the Peloponnesian War from a more general, historical perspective. The text and notes are those of B.C. Marchant, originally published in 1905. A recent introduction by Thomas Wiedemann takes account of the questions which students today will want to ask about Thucydides' history, and of the present state of research; it also covers the context and aims of the work and giving essential background to the events described.. There is also a list of essential dates and a recent bibliography (1993), in which a primary criterion for inclusion bas been accessibility to the non-academic English reader.

E.C. Marchant was editor of Xenophon, Books I, II, III, V; Opuscula: Book V; Thucydides, Books I, II, III, VI, VII; and co-author of Latin Prose Composition, Latin Grammar, and Bell’s Latin Course, in three parts.
Thomas Wiedemann was Professor of Latin at the University of Nottingham, UK. His publications included, as editor, Julio-Claudian Emperors (1991), Cicero and the End of the Roman Republic (1998) both available from Bloomsbury.

Paperback. Etat : Good. Sharpen your stylus and set your irony to Attic. Thucydides ? Book I (1982) , edited/introduced by the imperturbably learned E. C. Marchant for Bristol Classical Press , is the academic equivalent of a trireme with polished oars: it moves fast, it moves precisely, and if you fall out of rhythm it will absolutely splash you with footnotes. Here is the opening movement of history?s most famously unsentimental war narrative? archaeology of Hellas, policies, provocations, and the faintly embarrassed moment when everyone realises the real cause is fear ?kitted out with commentary that keeps the Greek marching and the reader un-befuddled. Book I is where Thucydides sets the table with a ruler and then gently removes the tablecloth while the cups remain upright. We get the programmatic prologue (?I?m writing for people who like facts more than flute music?), the Archaeology (why your ancestors were pirates and proud), the method (no gossip; witnesses only), and the spark-to-tinder tour : Corcyra vs. Corinth , Potidaea?s pique , Megarian decrees , and Sparta?s allergic reaction to Athenian confidence . The verdict? The truest cause of the Peloponnesian War was not any of these little kerfuffles but the way Athenian power kept growing and Sparta?s nerves kept shrinking ?a diagnosis as modern as your inbox. Marchant?s apparatus is the best kind of scholarly chaperone: present, punctual, and never shouting. Expect: Greek that behaves : syntax parsed, particles domesticated, participles coaxed into admitting their motives. Crisp notes on proper names, places, and that one verb that always pretends to be simple until it isn?t. Historical cross-references that show how a shipping dispute becomes a syllabus on hegemony. Textual nudges where the Greek winks or glowers and English is asked to keep up. Maps and context that orient you from the Kerkyraean squabbles to the Spartan vote , without needing a trireme and a personal herald. The joy of this volume is tone. Thucydides is cool to the touch; Marchant provides the warm towel. The result is a reading experience where method meets melodrama and only method survives: speeches carefully framed, motives weighed like olives, and the argument proceeding with the immaculate logic of a hoplite line. You do not read Book I so much as submit to its audit. Why this copy? It strides in from the gloriously straightforward emporium Crappy Old Books , bearing Condition: Good with the quiet dignity of a well-kept Loeb that?s seen things. Translation: sound binding, clean text, honest edgewear ?scholarly patina rather than calamity. The kind of paperback that will sit square on your desk and not curl under the pressure of your dictionary. Vital stats for your docket of causes: Title: Thucydides ? Book I Editor/Commentary: E. C. Marchant Publisher: Bristol Classical Press , 1982 ISBN: 0862920272 Condition: Good (upright, annotated-ready, unflappable) Vendor: Crappy Old Books ?the name shrugs; the stock cites. Buy it for the Greek and the grind , keep it for the clarity and the cold water . After a few chapters you?ll find yourself diagnosing world events in Thucydidean categories (?proximate cause vs. truest cause?), pronouncing Corcyra with theatrical confidence, and filing your own life under SEQ: method ? evidence ? conclusion . It?s the start of the war, the start of the argument, and?thanks to Marchant?the start of you reading Thucydides without needing divine intervention. N° de réf. du vendeur 4770
