ifty years ago a process of change began in the Middle East. As oil wealth began to flow, one by one the countries of the region made a start on building ports, airports, roads, water supplies in short the basic infrastructure on which modern civilisation is based. With the oil boom of the 1970s the pace of development was redoubled. Because of historical links, British civil engineering firms took a leading role in designing and building this new infrastructure, which transformed the region as, a century before, an earlier generation of engineers had transformed Victorian Britain. This book describes the most important projects such as Dubai s dry dock, the Greater Cairo Wastewater Project, and the new industrial city of Jubail and places them in the historical and political context of the time. And it pays tribute to the astonishing achievements of the thousands of engineers and others who played a part in the transformation.
Gwilym Roberts CBE FEng became Chairman of Acer Group Ltd when his firm of John Taylor & Sons merged with Freeman Fox & Partners in 1987. Responsible for many major projects around the world, he has had particular experience in the Middle East. From Kuwait in 1952 to Cairo in 1992, his 40 years experience has covered schemes in virtually every country of the region. He was President of the Institution of Civil Engineers 1986 7. David Fowler MIStructE is an experienced journalist and engineer. He was formerly News Analysis Editor of the New Civil Engineer and is now Features Editor of The Engineer.
