From an AI overview: "Refracted Images: The Canary Islands Through a New World Lens, Transatlantic Readings is a literary and cultural study by scholar Eyda M. Merediz published by the Arizona Center for Medieval and Renaissance Studies. It explores how the Canary Islands served as a crucial laboratory for Spanish imperialism before the colonization of the Americas. The Core Theme. Think of a "refracted image" like a pencil looking bent in a glass of water. The Canary Islands act as that glass of water. They altered how early modern Europeans viewed both the Americas and themselves. The book argues that Spain's overseas experiences in the Americas heavily influenced how Renaissance writers looked back at the earlier conquest of the Canary Islands. Instead of just being a stepping stone or a resting stop for transatlantic ships, the islands became a symbolic mirror where empires reflected on their own actions.Key Texts Analyzed. Merediz examines three primary texts from the 16th and early 17th centuries to show this transatlantic relationship:Alonso de Espinosa (1594): Espinosa uses religious history to quietly critique the harshness of the Canary conquest, offering the peaceful nature of the native people (the Guanches) as a model of Christian virtue.Antonio de Viana (1604): This epic poet writes about historical truths but blends them with romance, envisioning a shared cultural destiny between the islands and mainland Spain.Lope de Vega (1618): In his play Los Guanches de Tenerife, the famous playwright uses the island setting to criticize greedy, gold-worshipping conquistadors and highlight the violent realities of imperial expansion. Why It Matters. The study reveals that literary and cultural exchanges across the Hispanic world were highly fluid. By looking through a "New World lens," writers in Europe used the Canary Islands to process the ethical crises of colonization, the treatment of indigenous populations, and the blending of cultures. [There is] a detailed breakdown of its arguments in the Renaissance Quarterly review.". 1st ed? (No additional printings listed. Hardcover. Hardcover. Etat : New. Etat de la jaquette : New. Cloth, dj. New. "During the "Age of Exploration and Discovery," the Canary Islands became an important Atlantic post for European colonial experimentation before the encounter with the New World. This event, in turn, changed forever the way Europeans wrote history and conceived of other cultures, which inevitably influenced the Old World. The Canary Islands, geographically at the midway of a transatlantic passage, a "contact zone" par excellence, appear in this book as an important symbolic locus of imperial transactions at the turn of the seventeenth century." "Three works - a historiographic text by Alonso de Espinosa, an epic poem by Antonio de Viana, and a play by Lope de Vega, provide the main analytic corpus of this study."--BOOK JACKET.Title Summary field provided by Blackwell North America, Inc.
