Es gibt kaum einen anderen Künstler des späten 19. Jahrhunderts, dessen Werk so skurril, ironisch, tiefgründig und reich an Interpretationsmöglichkeiten ist wie das des belgischen Malers James Ensor (1860-1949). Seine ungewöhnlichen Motive, die zum unverwechselbaren Sinnbild für die Absurdität des Daseins wurden, haben die deutschen Expressionisten ebenso beeinflusst wie die französischen Surrealisten. Gerade in Hinblick auf neue Tendenzen wie die Manifestationen des Grotesken und Komischen in der zeitgenössischen Malerei gewinnt Ensors Schaffen erneut an Aktualität. Mit etwa 80 Meisterwerken auf Leinwand und über 60 Arbeiten auf Papier präsentiert die Monografie Schlüsselwerke aus allen Schaffensperioden; besonderes Augenmerk gilt dabei dem von der Forschung lange Zeit vernachlässigten Spätwerk des Künstlers.
