Virginia Woolf completed Melymbrosia in 1912 when she was thirty years old. The story concerned the emotional and sexual awakening of a young Englishwoman traveling abroad, and bristled with social commentary on issues as varied as homosexuality, the suffrage movement, and colonialism. She was warned by colleagues, however, that publishing an outspoken indictment of Britain could prove disastrous to her fledgling career as a novelist. Moreover, the critical offensive from men would be especially harsh towards a woman author. Woolf thus revised the novel extensively, omitting much of the political candor until, in 1915, the quieter book was published under the title The Voyage Out. The original Melymbrosia offers a rare look into the formative mind of the modernist master who revolutionized twentieth century literature. Here, one sees the young Virginia Woolf learning her craft. Like James Joyce s Stephen Hero, the original treatment of A Portrait of the Artist as a Young Man, or Ralph Ellison s posthumously published Juneteenth, Melymbrosia is a "lost classic" that owes its existence to the research of a devoted scholar, in this instance Louise DeSalvo, who spent seven years uncovering the original novel from Woolf s papers in the archives of the New York Public Library."

Hardcover. Etat : Near Fine. Etat de la jaquette : Very Good. 1st Edition. Stated First Edition. 'Scholar's Edition.' With three Appendixes running a total of 52 pages. This book is in very nice condition. The covers are exceptionally clean. I don't see any soiling, though there's a slightly darkened spot on the rear. The silver lettering on the spine is nicely bright. The only cover imperfections are very minor, some crinkling at the top edge of the spine, and a slight scratch on the rear. The cover edges are in excellent shape, no rubbing. The cover corners look very good as well, a teeny tiny bit of very superficial rubbing at the rear bottom one. The page edges are very clean. The book is square and the spine is straight. The binding is very solid from cover to cover with nicely tight pages throughout and nicely tight covers as well. The inside covers and end papers are a soft, light green, all very clean. The pages are exceptionally clean. Scrolling through, I'm not finding any instances of soiling. I'm also not finding any creasing. There are no markings. No attachments of any kind. And no one has written their name or anything else anywhere in the book. You can see the dust jacket in the first few photos. It too is exceptionally clean with only one tiny, hard-to-see spot on the front. There are two small tears off the top edge of the spine, one tiny closed tear off the top edge of the front, and one small tear off the top edge of the rear. There are also two scratches on the rear cover and a couple of speck-sized scuffs at the rear covers top edge. The white flaps are in excellent shape, perfectly clean. There is one tiny crinkle at the front flap's top edge, and one tiny crease at the rear flap's top corner. The jacket is NOT price-clipped, not clipped at all. I have it in a fitted protective cover. From the dust jacket: 'A study of the changes between this early version and The Voyage Out of 1915 will reveal much about the nature of the twentieth-century novel, about the art of writing and revision, about Virginia Woolf herself, her changing views of women, life, love, marriage, politics, and art-- the evolution of what she had called 'a view of one's own' '.
