H. Baur, The Inlander: Life and Work of Charles Burchfield, 1893-1967 is the standard biographical and critical monograph on the American visionary watercolorist. Tracing Burchfield's development from early expressionist nature studies in Salem, Ohio, through the industrial streetscapes of Buffalo, New York, to his monumental late pantheistic watercolors, the text draws on extensive excerpts from the artist's private journals alongside art-historical analysis. The volume carries full-page color reproductions, monochrome illustrations, and text figures of Burchfield's symbolic visual language. First published in 1982 by University of Delaware Press and Cornwall Books, the work was reissued in 1984 to coincide with the Charles Burchfield retrospective organized by The Metropolitan Museum of Art (January 30 to March 25, 1984), with the exhibition checklist in the front matter. It appears in the series An American Art Journal Book. John I. H. Baur (1909-1987) served as Curator of Paintings and Sculpture at the Brooklyn Museum and as Director of the Whitney Museum of American Art from 1968 to 1974, and wrote monographs on Charles Burchfield, Theodore Robinson, Joseph Stella, and Philip Evergood. David Kahler (1936-2026), president of Kahler Slater, co-designed the Milwaukee Art Museum's Quadracci Pavilion expansion with Santiago Calatrava. The volume includes a chronology and bibliography.
