Etat : Near Fine. Frontispiece, 144 pp; 39 text figures. Original cloth. Near Fine. First Edition. SIGNED BY JAMES A. VAN ALLEN TO ED STONE: "To: Ed Stone/ with my admiration for your long term/ leadership in planetary exploration/ and heliospheric physics; and my/ special thanks for your recent lecture,/ the highlight of my 90th birthday party./ James A. Van Allen/ 10/'04." With the ink name stamp of "E. C. Stone/ May 15 1984" on the front flyleaf. The lecture to which Van Allen referred was "James Van Allen: From Explorer 1 to The Edge of Interstellar Space" by Edward Stone on October 9, 2004. "On Saturday, October 9, 2004, The University of Iowa and the University of Iowa Alumni Association hosted a celebration to honor Prof. James Van Allen and his many accomplishments, and in recognition of his 90th birthday. Activities included an invited lecture series, a public lecture followed by a cake and punch reception, and an evening banquet." A fine association between two of the giants in American space science. After James Van Allen's death in 2006 Edward Stone wrote in the Los Angeles Times: "His discovery of the Van Allen belts was the first major scientific discovery of the Space Age . . . . The discovery was unexpected, and that's what made it so exciting. It set the tone for the further exploration of space by revealing how much there was to be discovered." Quoting Wikipedia about James Van Allen: "James Alfred Van Allen (September 7, 1914-August 9, 2006) was an American space physicist at the University of Iowa who was instrumental in establishing the field of magnetospheric research in space. His discovery of the Van Allen radiation belts in 1958, zones of energetic charged particles trapped by Earth's magnetic field, was the first major scientific finding of the Space Age. As principal investigator for scientific instruments on 24 Earth satellites and planetary missions, Van Allen provided the first in situ measurements of the magnetospheres of Jupiter and Saturn, pioneered the use of energetic particle absorption signatures to detect planetary rings and satellites, and carried out a multi-decade program of cosmic ray observations that established the radial gradient of galactic cosmic ray intensity from 1 AU to beyond 65 AU in the heliosphere." ABOUT THE RECIPIENT EDWARD C. STONE: Quoting Wikipedia, "Edward Carroll Stone Jr. (January 23, 1936-June 9, 2024) was an American space physicist, professor of physics at the California Institute of Technology, and director of the NASA Jet Propulsion Laboratory (JPL) from 1991 to 2001. He was the project scientist of the Voyager program, which sent two spacecraft to the outer Solar System's giant planets and became the first spacecraft to enter interstellar space. Stone led the Voyager mission for 50 years, from 1972 until his retirement in 2022, overseeing the spacecraft's encounters with Jupiter (1979), Saturn (19801981), Uranus (1986) and Neptune (1989). Under his leadership, the mission discovered active volcanism on Jupiter's moon Io, new moons and ring systems. The Voyagers continued beyond the planets to cross the heliopause and enter the interstellar medium, with Voyager 1 becoming the first spacecraft to leave the Solar System in 2012, followed by Voyager 2 in 2018. The Voyager mission became the longest-running NASA mission, with Stone being its face and advocate. As JPL director, Stone oversaw the successful launches of Mars Pathfinder with the first Mars rover Sojourner, Mars Global Surveyor, CassiniHuygens and other missions during NASA's 'faster, better, cheaper' era. Throughout his career, he served as principal investigator on nine NASA spacecraft missions, including SAMPEX, the Advanced Composition Explorer and scientific instruments on the Galileo and STEREO missions.".
