Hardcover. Etat : Very Good. Etat de la jaquette : Good. 1st Edition. Very Good / Good+ First edition of Mark Davidson's Uncommon Sense, a biography and intellectual study of Austrian-Canadian biologist Ludwig von Bertalanffy (1901-1972), best known as the founder and principal architect of General Systems Theory. With a foreword by R. Buckminster Fuller and an introduction by Kenneth E. Boulding. Davidson combines biography with an accessible account of Bertalanffy's wide-ranging scientific and philosophical ideas and their influence across biology, psychology, psychiatry, sociology, organizational theory, and other disciplines. Bertalanffy developed General Systems Theory as an alternative to narrowly reductionist approaches to science, emphasizing organisms and other complex phenomena as interacting, organized systems rather than merely collections of independent parts. Davidson traces both Bertalanffy's life and the development of these ideas, placing his work within the broader intellectual history of twentieth-century science. Includes bibliography and index. Condition: Black cloth hardcover is sound and firmly bound, with silver lettering to the spine remaining bright and legible. Boards and spine show only light shelf and handling wear. Page edges display mild age toning; interior pages appear clean and well preserved with no significant writing, highlighting, or ownership markings observed. Original silver dust jacket is present and complete, showing moderate rubbing and surface scuffing, scattered small scratches and marks, edge and corner wear, light creasing, and several small chips/nicks, particularly along the upper and lower edges and spine extremities. Jacket remains fully readable and presents well despite the wear. Overall Very Good book in a Good+ dust jacket. An especially interesting title for collections concerning the history and philosophy of science, systems theory, cybernetics, theoretical biology, psychology, and interdisciplinary science. Bertalanffy's General Systems Theory became influential well beyond biology, providing a conceptual framework for understanding complex systems in disciplines ranging from ecology and medicine to economics, management, psychology, and sociology. The participation of R. Buckminster Fuller and Kenneth E. Boulding, themselves major figures in interdisciplinary and systems thinking, adds further interest to this first edition. Carefully packed and shipped in a sturdy box with appropriate protective materials. USPS Media Mail available within the United States unless otherwise requested. International shipping available at cost. Returns accepted in accordance with AbeBooks policies. SI 2b. N° de réf. du vendeur ABE-1786139368025
