This book celebrates the long and distinguished career of one of the most prominent editorial cartoonists in the country for more than half a century beginning in the mid-1950s. Etta Hulme was the most prominent woman editorial cartoonist of her time and offered insightful commentary on Fort Worth, Texas, American, and international politics over that entire time. The book is an attempt to offer some of her finest work across all of these categories and over the span of her career. With more than 8000 cartoons in her collection, trying to understand her essence with only about 180 examples is a daunting task.

Hulme was a provocative artist―she addressed the enduring problems of American democracy head on. She delighted in exposing hypocrisy in public officials and spared no one from pointed criticism. Her distinctive drawings served as a lightening rod for readers of the Fort Worth Star Telegram. She embraced critiques of her often libral perspectives and celebrated her many admirers.

This book begins with a short biographical sketch of Hulme. It is then divided into 6 distinct chapters evaluating her political cartoons―U.S. presidents, American politics and policy, Texas governors, Texas politics and policy, Texas and Fort Worth Congressional leaders, and international politics. The depth and breadth of her work is evident in the cartoons selected and together they offer insightful looks at a half century of American politics and at Hulme’s creative take on the issues of her time.

James W. Riddlesperger, Jr. (B.A., M.A., North Texas State University; Ph.D., University of Missouri-Columbia) is Emeritus Professor of Political Science at Texas Christian University. A native of Denton, Texas, he taught at TCU from 1982 until 2025. His specialty is American politics, with emphasis in the presidency, Congress, and Texas politics. He is co-author of Texas Politics (14th edition, Cengage, 2022), Lone Star Leaders (2011, TCU), and The Austin-Boston Connection (2009, Texas A&M Press). He co-edited, among others, Reflections on Wright (2024, TCU Press), Reflections on Rayburn, (2018, TCU Press), Considering American Government: A Reader (2^nd edition, Kendall Hunt, 2020), The Wright Stuff (2013, TCU Press), and The Presidential Leadership and Civil Rights Policy (Greenwood, 1995). An edited book of political cartoons from artist Etta Hulme is forthcoming. He has published more than 40 articles in scholarly journals as well as numerous chapters in edited books. Named a Piper Professor of Texas in 2024, he is also winner of the TCU Chancellor’s Award for Creative Teaching and Research in 2017 and Honors Professor of the year in 2012. He is a frequent consultant to news media about politics and elections. He was Chief Reader of the College Board’s AP US Government and Politics Exam (2011-2015) and is past president of the Southwestern Political Science Association (2011).

Carrie Liu Currier is a Professor of Political Science at Texas Christian University and the Director of the National Consortium for Teaching about Asia in Texas. Her research focuses on Chinese politics, international relations, political economy, gender and politics, and Asian Americans in higher education. She is co-editor of China’s Energy Relations with the Developing World (2011, Continuum Books) and Gender and Politics (forthcoming, DeGruyter), and has numerous articles addressing economic reform in China, China’s foreign policy with the Middle East, energy policy, population policy, and Asian Pacific Americans in higher education. She is the past president of the Southwest Conference of Asian Studies and is the incoming president of the Western Political Science Association.
