Shipped with care. --- The complete first number of BLAST, the 1914 magazine of the Vorticist movement, edited and largely written by Wyndham Lewis. Its first twenty pages carry the Vorticist manifesto, which sums up its principles and then lists people and things to be "blasted" or "blessed," all set in heavy sans-serif type. Lewis's own pieces include the play "Enemy of the Stars," a long run of "Vortices and Notes," an obituary notice of Spencer Gore, and an address to the suffragettes urging them to stop attacking works of art. There are also poems, extracts in translation from Kandinsky, short prose writings, and a section from a novel later published as The Good Soldier. The plates reproduce paintings, drawings and sculpture by the Vorticist circle, including some of the earliest abstract work by British artists. A foreword introduces the magazine.
