Stiff paper covers, nicks and slight scuffing at spine ends, several small brown stains along rear joint probably caused by binding glue. Light foxing to top edge; small slender stain at upper fore-edge. Author's four-line ink inscription upon the half-title page: "To Ann and | Kinloch Gill | Frank Smith | June, 1988." Interior pages are otherwise bright and clean. Binding remains crisp. A very good+ copy. With new Foreword by David Molpus, Introduction, map, b/w illustrations, Acknowledgements and Bibliography, and Index. Originally published in 1954 as a volume of the lauded and collected Rivers of America series. A native of Leflore County, Mississippi, author Frank Smith (1918-1997) was elected to the US House of Representatives for six terms from 1951 to 1962 where after he was appointed by President Kennedy to the Board of Directors of the Tennessee Valley Authority on which he served until his retirement in 1972. Smith authored/co-authored a total of nine books and, with his son Fred, founded Mississippi's finest rare and used bookshop Choctaw Books in Jackson which unfortunately closed in 2015. {MS-Shelf#3} ISBN 0878053557.
