In a brief introduction, the history of the fan is succinctly traced: from its rise to prominence as a fashion accessory in the 16th century, when Henri III of France first used one at court, to its demise during World War I, when such luxury items, not considered patriotic, went out of style. Descriptions of iconography and information on approximate date of design, country of origin and materials used accompany excellent photographs of the pieces. The variety include fans made of lace, feathers, silver, tortoiseshell, paper and ivory, decorated with depictions of classical subjects, balloons and balloonists, a stagecoach robbery, scenes of daily lifeeven a satiric commemorative of Prime Minister Walpole's controversial excise-tax measure of 1733. About the book >.>.> Unfolding Beauty: The Art of the Fan presents a selection of one hundred fans and fan-related works from the collection of the Department of Textiles and Costumes at the Museum of Fine Arts, Boston. Reproduced in full colour, the objects were made in Europe and the Americas between the sixteenth and twentieth centuries. The selection represents one part of the Museum?s extensive holdings; examples produced in the Far East are not included. The book grew from the Museum?s fan collection, whose Western holdings number 424. Its core came from Esther Oldham?s gift in 1976, while Elizabeth Day McCormick had donated a large collection, including fans, in 1943. Earlier bequests from Boston residents in the 1880s and 1890s also contributed to the collection. Anna Gray Bennett studied and selected the objects, wrote the book and supervised the photography. The publication was supported by a grant from the National Endowment for the Arts. (MP). N° de réf. du vendeur Batch-FM793-VG-15641
