This is a new book designed for a one-semester course for non-science undergraduates and assumes no knowledge of genetics beyond A-level biology. It describes' in a clear and interesting way the general principles of genetics and their applications to human beings. "Basic Human Genetics" presents genetics as a continually developing science with practical and ethical implications for individuals and society. "Basic Human Genetics" contains substantial discussion of many issues of general interest, including: the role of science in society; the ethical aspects of genetic counselling, population screening, and gene therapy; the impact of the human genome project; the use of twins in genetic research; the use of DNA fingerprinting in courtrooms; and controversies surrounding the genetic study of behavioral traits such as alcoholism, IQ, and sex differences. The authors often cite actual case studies in describing specific genetic disorders. They present recent discoveries about Fragile X and other expanding genes; the phenomena of imprinting and anticipation; oncogenes, tumor suppressor genes, and the AIDS virus; the polymerase chain reaction; cloning human genes in bacteria; and the mapping of clinically important genes such as those involved in Huntington's disease, familial Alzheimer's disease, cystic fibrosis, and muscular dystrophy. These examples occur within broader discussions of topics such as gene action, mutation, cancer, DNA technologies, cytogenetics, and the genetics of development.
