Karen E. Eifler, Ph.D., is an associate professor of education at the University of Portland in Oregon. She taught religious education and elementary school in the dioceses of Los Angeles and Oakland, Calif. for 15 years. In A Month of Mondays she presents 30 true stories celebrating teachers as they experience God's grace in action. Each offering opens with a quotation from scripture or other sacred writing related to the day's topic. Readers are invited to reflect on miracles they themselves will be working that day and the faces and limbs of Christ they will encounter...even on Mondays. Many of the stories come from middle school classrooms. We get some good examples for dealing with bullying; kids who are pistols and pills ; underachievers; and physically, emotionally, and financially disadvantaged. Most of the stories recount heroic efforts by teachers that often lead to positive outcomes not just for the student but for others as well. Within the stories Eifler highlights specific qualities of good teachers. For example, she writes that teachers must be great actors, motivational speakers, intercessors, interpreters and referees who can name the capitals of all fifty states, unpack the Pythagorean Theorem three ways, and explain why a loving and omnipotent God allows evil to exist. In another Monday's reflection she lists more than a dozen roles teachers must fill during any given week, including medic, social worker, and comedian. The one description Eifler rejects is just a teacher. Though A Month of Mondays is intended primarily for teachers, administrators, and catechists, anyone dealing with children will find a good bit of useful information and inspiration here.
