Terence Conran is one of the world's best-known designers, restaurateurs and retailers. In the 1960s he founded Habitat - the chain of homeware stores that brought good, modern design within reach of the general population for the very first time.
Over the subsequent 50 years Terence built another group of companies centred around design, retailing, restaurants and hotels. Today, Conran owns restaurants and shops in eight cities throughout the world and a design business serving many international clients that includes architecture and interior design, product and graphic design and brand licensing.
In January 2011 Conran began working with Marks & Spencer in the UK, designing an exclusive range of homewares for the store. In 2012 Conran signed a deal to collaborate with US retail giant jcpenney to design an exclusive range of furniture, lighting and accessories for the home. The initial collection launched in spring 2013 into 300 jcpenney stores throughout the US and there will be new ranges launching each spring and autumn.
Terence was knighted for his services to design in 1983 and has been provost of the Royal College of Art in London. In 1982 he opened the very first museum in the world dedicated to design, which is now the celebrated Design Museum in London, due to move to new premises in 2015 thanks to a massive expansion programme.
Every single thing that has been made by man or woman has been designed. We are quick to recognise the designer's imprint in the cut of a couture dress, in the outline of a landmark building or in the shape of the latest motor car. Less visible are those designers who shape and fill our daily lives with everything from the paperclip to the personal stereo, the flatpack shelving unit to the supermarket label. In fact, design is all around us, but we very rarely notice it. In this book, Terence Conran makes us open our eyes and address the ways in which we encounter and relate to design on a daily basis. A fascinating text full of information and anecdote, along with stimulating photography, makes this book an indispensable reference book for all those interested in the subject.

Hardback. Etat : Very Good. Using such iconic examples as the Jacobsen Egg chair, the Concorde airplane and wartime innovations such as the Burberry trenchcoat and the Zippo lighter, Terence Conran presents the century's most significant design innovations. From such early century movements as the Wiener Werkstatte, the Bauhaus and the Arts and Crafts Movement to the currently hot Mid-century Modern and present-day Post-modern examples, he argues the case for design as an intrinsic and creative force in the modern world. He writes on the place of kitsch in the design universe, examines the respective roles of aesthetics and practicality - the eternal form/function argument - and argues that the designer's role, even mission, is to help add a spiritual dimension to life, to make life worth living. Illustrated with 329 full color and 70 black and white photographs representing all the important moments in modern design, Conran on Design is a superb visual sourcebook that will provide inspiration for art students, designers, architects and all those who appreciate the value of good design in this increasingly design-aware age.
