He does so with surprising directness. In the first lecture he enters without warning into a discussion of the Guardian of the Threshold ~ the spiritual being who separates ordinary consciousness from spiritual consciousness. The task of spiritual science, he claims, is to overcome the reductionist premises of modern culture and help humanity cross the threshold into the supersensible by conscious means. He argues that such understanding is necessary if we are to meet the pedagogical needs of our times. This is not to say that spiritual science dismisses modern science. Rather, the anthroposophical approach allows a child to be understood in its wholeness as a being of body, soul, and spirit. Also striking is the openness of Steiner's presentations. He quotes Goethe's saying, "Consider the what, but pay even more attention to the how." Teaching should be artistic, creative, improvisational. Yet, it is clear that the great battle concerns the spiritual nature of the child. Teachers must discover the element of "unbornness" in their children. They must form a relationship with what human beings experience in the spiritual world before birth. / By the time of the second collection of Rudolf Steiner's public lectures on Waldorf education, the situation in which Steiner sought to present his ideas had changed~he had achieved considerable prominence, his lectures were regularly reported in the press, and the Waldorf school movement was gaining increasing recognition. The cosmopolitan background of these lectures emphasizes the universal nature of an education based on the understanding of the human being as an evolving being of body, soul, and spirit. It is clear, too, from the range of topics covered~education and art, education and the moral life~that Waldorf is a world cultural, not a local, phenomenon. In this collection, Steiner is outspoken with regard to the spiritual nature of human beings and the world, including the spiritual nature of Waldorf education. Read with an understanding of the contexts in which they were given, these lectures deepen and amplify our understanding or the mission and purpose of Waldorf education in remarkable ways.
