Prior to the American Civil War great revivals broke out, especially under the preaching of Charles G. Finney. Following the Awakening the emphasis turned to the teaching of the “Second Blessing.” The rise of the holiness revival came before the Civil War, but following the war two great forces of holiness leadership emerged. The first was in Timothy Merritt’s publication Guide to Holiness. The second was through the teaching of Phoebe Palmer and her sister, Sarah Langford Palmer. These sisters held gatherings in their home (later known as Tuesday Meetings) to teach and promote the experience of the “pure heart.” Both Phoebe and Sarah were sanctified 1835-36.
Some people say more superintendents were sanctified in their Tuesday Meetings than at camp meetings. These meetings were the forerunner of The National Camp Meeting Association for the Promotion of Holiness.
One cannot understand the holiness movement today without a knowledge of Phoebe Palmer and the Tuesday Meetings.
The Way of Holiness with Notes by the Way is her own account of how she sought and received heart purity, and how she led many others into the Second Blessing.
