The first of his Sherlock Holmes stories was a study in scarlet (1887), Followed by another novel, The sign of four (1890), but Sherlock Holmes rode the waves of popularity only after he started featuring in The strand Magazine (from 1891). The strand stories were collected as the adventures of Sherloc Holme (1892) and the Memories of Sherlock Holmes (1894). Doyle's attempt to kill of his creation was not successful and the classic detective made a comeback in two novels, the Hound of the Baskervills (1902) and The Valley of fear (1915), and in collection of short stories, The Return of Sherlock Holmes (1905). His Last Bow (1917) and the case-Book of Sherlock Holmes (1927).
