Based on manuscripts secretly written and smuggled out of Yugoslavia, this volume recounts the political history of that country during and after World War II. It is a true story that follows a young man from membership of the nationalist resistance in his native Serbia to the horrors of Nazi concentration camps and Yugoslav gulags. His experiences prompt a comparison of fascist and communist regimes and prisons. This work revives the epoque of World War II Europe, the invasion and dismemberment of Yugoslavia, the resistance and the civil war, and the subsequent communist revolution.
