Meanwhile, the Engineer became the most wanted man in modern Israeli history. Prime Minister Yitzhak Rabin had ordered the state to mobilize all its resources to stop the bombings. The result was one of the largest manhunts in recent history which spread over the entire globe and involved Britain's MI5, the Royal Jordanian Special Forces, the FBI and the New York City Police Department. Charged with the task of catching Ayyash was the Shin Bet, the most secretive and elite of Israel's secret services. Samuel M. Katz, a security and special operations expert, reveals here for the first time how the Shin Bet, its director and its agents in the field, conducted an unprecedented and merciless search and destroy mission against one man. Ayyash, however, was not an easy target, even for the Shin Bet. He was highly intelligent and elusive and possessed a sophisticated support network. He was a master of disguise able to pass himself off one moment as an old Arab woman and another as an Orthodox Jewish student, and he was especially adept at recruiting the susceptible young men willing to blow themselves up along with their victims. As the death toll rose so did the Engineer's popularity as he came to be revered like a rock star by many Palestinians.
