This contains a collection of case studies concerning local area network installations in a variety of library settings, from small libraries and micro-based networks to larger institutions with server-based systems connected to a larger number of workstations. Each author demonstrates how the library concerned went about the process of selecting, implementing and maintaining a library microcomputer network. Contributors offer practical information regarding the process of installing each of the hardware, software and human components that are needed to form a successful network. Each article addresses considerations regarding the principal uses of the network, who were the main users and the practical success of the network in use. In most cases funding is explored, along with the possible future development of the network. Many of the cases make use of diagrams to ease understanding of their approach.
