This is the book for ELT teachers at all levels! Packed with important and up-to-the-minute information, Effective Teachers, Effective Schools reviews how English is taught to English language students in the school systems of Australia, Canada, England and the United States. For each country, Mary Ashworth, an internationally recognized expert in the field of second language teaching and learning, includes a summary of the history of ESL/ELT in that country, and of the programs and policies that affect the teaching of English there. She has also included chapters reviewing and comparing teaching methods, teacher qualifications and bilingual education, as well as the contributions of parents and communities in each of the different countries. The Table of Contents reveals the breadth and depth of Mary Ashworth's survey, emphasizing this book's value as either a standard reference or as a sourcebook and handbook for practicing ESL teachers. All the four countries surveyed are covered in every chapter.Within each, there are up to 10 sub-sections examining different aspects of the chapter subject. At the end of the book there is a list of abbreviations of important organizations and terminology related to the profession, and the book concludes with an invaluable bibliography, pointing the way to further reading and research. Audience: All practicing language teachers and teachers in training.
