Descriptive interpretation of northwest coast Indian art as represented by this collection of several previously unpublished works of Wilson Duff. The tragic death of Wilson Duff at the age of 51, cut short the life of one of the leading experts on the arts and culture of Native peoples of the Northwest Coast. An anthropology professor at the University of B.C, his death, by his own hand, terminated his uncommonly perceptive research into the philosophy and psychology of Native art. Bird of Paradox consists of unpublished works by Duff which present his unique theoretical ideas that contribute to art scholarship, as well as creative writings and poetry which expose his emotional experiences with and feelings toward Native art and culture. Editor E. N. Anderson has provided detailed introductory material recounting Duff's life and work, and puts Duff's final contributions in the context of Northwest Coast life.

Soft cover. Etat : Fine. 1st Edition. Wilson Duff was a Canadian anthropologist, museum curator, and scholar of Northwest Coast Indigenous cultures and art. Duff was Curator of Anthropology at the British Columbia Provincial Museum from 1950 to 1965, then Professor of Anthropology at the University of British Columbia from 1965 until his death in 1976. He was involved in museum planning, exhibitions, archaeological site protection, and the preservation of totem poles in Haida Gwaii, then commonly referred to as the Queen Charlotte Islands. "Bird of Paradox" brings together Duff's own previously unpublished writings, especially on Northwest Coast Indigenous art, symbolism, psychology, and meaning. His death in 1976, at age 51, left much of his later thinking unpublished, and "Bird of Paradox" was created to make some of that material available. The book is especially valuable because Duff was interested not only in documenting objects, but in asking what Northwest Coast art thought, meant, and did within its cultural world. The recurring phrase "Haida Art was for Thinking" is a good shorthand for the kind of interpretive work the book preserves. The editor, E. N. Anderson, provides introductory material that places Duff's life, work, and final intellectual contributions in the broader context of Northwest Coast life and art. Paperback. Fine, but for a bumped lower corner. *Please note: this volume will ship from Canada. Shipping costs have increased dramatically recently. DO NOT rely on the shipping quotes in my listing. I will obtain a quote if you are interested. However, generally shipping out of North America is now too expensive except for books of high value. N° de réf. du vendeur ABE-1786940580079
