In 1920, Karl Clark received his first instruction from H.M.Tory in 1920 to conduct analysis on the tar sands stock-piled on the University of Alberta campus (Edmonton). It was a task that would redefine Clark's life. Through lab work, and analysis and understanding in the field, he developed and perfected the hot water separation process to win oil from sticky goo. These are his personal/professional letters written during that learning process. Cond : Boards are brown w/ gold spine lettering. D.J. is rust and beige w/ a b/w photo of Clark at work in one of his experimental extraction plants. Former is bright, TIGHT and crisp in all respects. Latter is sim. w/ only a flap crease detracting. Clean !! Giftable !! No names nor marks. Neither tears nor folds. Quote (p. 147) : " Your letter addressed to Mr. P. Chester Thompson and making application for a position in the Alberta oil industry has, for some reason, been finally submitted to me for reply. It looks to me that about all I can say is that the item you saw about oil matters in Alberta was much more optimistic than the facts warrant. There is no industry springing up so far . ."
