Hardcover. Etat : Near Fine. Etat de la jaquette : Very Good. Black & White Photographs (illustrateur). First Edition. Dust jacket has light shelf wear, otherwise without flaw. 9.5 X 10" 163 pages. From 1976, Vancouver, BC. Haida carvers and basket weavers; Kwagutl carvers and blanket makers; Vancouver Island weavers and carvers; Cowichan knitters and Salish weavers; Thompson, Mount Currie and Coastal basket weavers; Okanagan and Carrier bead and leather workers, Carrier birch basket makers; Gitksan carvers and blanket makers; The Nass river, Stikine river, and Prince Rupert carvers. Distinguished photographer Ulli Steltzer sought out British Columbia's native artists in their own places, met them informally and recorded them at their crafts. In over 200 perceptive photographs Steltzer has captured ninety-three dedicated men and women as they carve silver, wood and argillite; prepare wool for weaving and knitting; dig roots and gather grasses for their baskets. There are glimpses of their studios, their homes and the countryside. Their words, too, are recorded: comments on their heritage, their present-day philosophy, on tools, materials, processes, and designs, that tell clearly - and often movingly - the uniqueness of the way they each see their work. **Bundle UP & Save On Postage**. Black boards with silver lettering on the spine. 163 historical and artistic pages nicely enhanced by black and white photographs and illustrations! "The Indian cultures that once flourished in the Northwest left a magnificent legacy. Nourished by a rich land and a benevolent climate, they produced profound and original art that is now recognized everywhere as a sophisticated expression of a unique way of life. For a time this creativity was suppressed along with ritual life, but today new craftsmen and master artists are creating new works that reflect a reinvigorated sense of tradition and community. Now, in the tradition of Edward S. Curtis, a distinguished photographer has sought out British Columbia's native artists in their own places, met them informally and recorded them at their crafts. In over 200 perceptive photographs Ulli Steltzer has captured ninety-three dedicated men and women as they carve silver, wood and argillite; prepare wool for weaving and knitting; dig roots and gather grasses for their baskets. There are glimpses of their studios, their homes and the countryside. Their words, too, are recorded; comments on their heritage, their present-day philosophy, on tools, materials, processes, and designs, that tell clearly ---- and often movingly ---- the uniqueness of the way they each see their work."
