The bloodiest battle ever fought on Texas soil took place in Atascosa County near the Medina River in 1813, twenty -three years before the battles of the Alamo, Goliad and San Jacinto. This account returns readers to a sandy valley in Atascosa County near the Medina River, where in August 1813 Spanish royalist forces crushed a rebel army of Anglo-American adventurers, Tejano republicans, and Native allies. Estimates of the dead and executed run as high as one thousand, and the defeat ended the Gutiérrez-Magee Expedition, which had crossed into Texas from Louisiana a year earlier as part of what is often called the First Texas Revolution. The narrative follows the expedition's rise and collapse, the strategic errors that doomed it, and the brutal reprisals that followed, while pressing the argument that the fighting took place some miles from the river itself and not on its banks. The manuscript was left unfinished at the author's death in 1977, and historian Robert Thonhoff later edited and annotated it, adding maps, battle reports, and photographs that anchor the story in documentary evidence. The treatment is thorough, and it gives frontier and military history enthusiasts a detailed look at a pivotal Spanish-era contest that shaped the road to Texas independence. Ted Schwarz was a native of Atascosa County, Texas, who researched the battle of Medina, which took place in his home county. He wrote several articles on the battle for the Atascosa Monitor in the 1930s, and his papers document research and writing of a manuscript first titled 'The Guns of Medina'. He died in the late 1970s and historian Robert Thonhoff later edited and annotated the manuscript for publication in 1985. Robert H. Thonhoff was a Texas author, historian, teacher, and judge who earned a master's degree in history from Southwest Texas State College with a thesis on the history of Karnes County.
