A violent rebellion in East Berlin has triggered a West German response and fanned dissension in the Eastern Soviet bloc. Fearing a "domino effect," Soviet military leaders have decided to launch a preemptive invasion into West Germany-a rapid thrust intended to neutralize NATO before it can be reinforced. Soviet troops begin moving into the Bavarian countryside "Plan Buran" is underway. In this scenario, Soviet affairs expert Steven Zaloga examines the Soviet war machine, and the plans and tactics that would be used in event of a war in Europe. Through Soviet eyes, we follow the first week of the war, as the 4th Army attempts to break through NATO's frontier defenses and push across the Danube River: mechanized infantry (BMP-2) attacks a prepared Bundeswehr defensive position, a Russian T-80 tank battalion is ambushed by American M1 Abrams main battle tanks, a spetsnaz pathfinder company parachutes behind NATO lines to prepare landing zones for follow-on airmobile forces, Hind-D attack helicopters fly close air support to help secure the airhead, amphibious artillery "swims" the Danube, MiG-29 Fulcrums dogfight CF-18 Hornets, and infantry forces attack a German stronghold with support of chemical weapons. From the Soviet perspective we see the war proceed, observing the inner workings and beginning to understand Soviet strengths and weaknesses. Each scenario is followed by a detailed analysis of the action-what happened and why, comparing Soviet advantages to NATO's. Critical questions are answered: How will the massive Soviet Army mobilize for war? How do Soviet "no frills" weapons stack up to Western high-tech systems? Is the Soviet soldier the equal of his NATO counterpart? Are the Soviets likely to use chemical weapons? Can the Soviets depend on their Warsaw Pact allies? Will Soviet numerical superiority assure victory? Discounting myths and perceptions (and misconceptions), Zaloga relies on solid evidence, using Soviet military texts. interviews with former Soviet soldiers, and declassified U.S. intelligence analyses. He provides a vivid portrayal of a Soviet style war and a perspective on the military balance in Europe today. N° de réf. du vendeur 2150260950
