The staggeringly high casualties suffered by the 6th Marine Regiment during World War I mean that Warren R. Jackson was almost certainly the only member of his company to survive from Verdun in 1916 to the end of the war. With that in mind, it is the manifestly human approach of this book that creates such a vivid impression of life in the trenches - this is not a diatribe against inept allied leadership or against the institution of war itself, it is the honest reflection of a concsript. His Time in Hell is an extremely valuable memoir of a World War I marine. It provides a wealth of information about enlisted life at the time, and is told in a self-deprecating tone that might lull the reader into thinking that perhaps the author was not much of a marine; however, the fact that he was regularly promoted, awarded two Silver Stars and the Croix de Guerre and that he was regularly chosen for operations that required intelligence and bravery should be enough to show that had not only these qualities, but also a measure of humility, a trait not often ascribed to men of his profession.

Beyond the fact that he lived in Houston following the war, virtually nothing is known about Warren R. Jackson. The manuscript was written in the late 1920s and found its way to a special collection of American History at the University of Texas, Austin, where it was recently unearthed by marine Corps historian George B. Clark. His previous books include With the Old Corps in Nicaragua and Devil Dogs.
