Synopsis

During World War II, the 'all Puerto Rican' 65th Infantry Regiment had been broken up, with its three battalions relegated to backwater assignments where combat was unlikely - a major slight to a pround regiment with a long and distinguished combat record. The Regiment regained a little pride and respect when it soundly defeated the veteran 3rd Infantry Division in manoeuvres after World War II. This victory in training foretold future successes in battle and the 'Borinqueneers' proved their combat prowess in Korea when they battled their way north from the Pusan Perimeter and later defended the strategic port of Hungnam in the face of seemingly overwhelming Chinese attacks, providing a safe harbour for the retreat of X Corps from the Chosin Reservoir. General Harris' book is both a history and a memoir - on the one hand filling a hitherto unwritten chapter in the history of the U.S. participation in Korea, and on the other telling the story in a way that only an eyewitness can. Full of enthusiasm, insight and sensitivity, his pride in the Regiment that was awarded 125 Silver Stars and four Distinguished Service Crosses under his command is obvious.
