Often called the American Agatha Christie, Mary Roberts Rinehart (1876-1958) was a prolific author who wrote hundreds of books, short stories, poems, travelogues, plays, and special articles. Many of her works were best-sellers, but critics were most appreciative of her murder mysteries. Several of her books and plays were adapted for movies. Although she never used the phrase herself, she is considered the source of "The butler did it."
