By following the star map of the constellations Carter elucidates the symbolic meaning of the figures images numbers and events that we encounter in St John's mystical journey. He explores mysteries of intriguing numbers such as 666 the number of the Beast and the recurrence of the number seven throughout Revelation. The image of three women - theScarlet One the Woman Clothed with the Sun and the Moon and the One above Standing on the Crown (the New Jerusalem) - is also central to the symbols of Revelation. Carter combines science and religion astrology astronomy mythology and great story-tellingto re-examine an important part of the Bible that captures the wonder and imagination of generations past and those to come. Frederick Carter was born in Yorkshire in 1885 and lived most of his adult life in London where he died in 1967. He was an accomplished Symbolist painter and was widely exhibited during his lifetime. With a close similarity to the drawings of his friend Austin Osman Spare his most distinctive drawings contain esoteric and apocalyptic themes.
