The next decade will be a watershed for Christians," writes William Stanmeyer. "The nation can commit only so many abortions. It can tolerate only so much divorce, sexual permissiveness, and pornography. The secularization of the schools and the erosion of family life can only go so far. At some point, the nation will either recoil from what it has done, or seek to go all the way — to erase from its laws and finally from its collective memory any vestiges of the Christian perspective. Many will not face the fact that the gospel is being overturned by people elected with Christian votes. Some regard politics as a "dirty Business," of no concern to the church. Others on both the left and right identify their cause with the gospel and measure Christian success by the degree of political success. Clear and Present Danger calls for clear thinking about politics and aggressive action in law, education, medicine, and culture. A pronounced Christian presence in the institutions of our society may well be a matter of survival for those who hold to the gospel of Jesus Christ."
