Sono pochi i fotografi che hanno lasciato un'eredità paragonabile a quella di Edward Weston (1886-1968). Dopo un decennio impegnato nella fortunata realizzazione di fotografie con tecniche pittoriche a effetto flou, Weston divenne la forza motrice del gruppo di artisti della West Coast conosciuti come Gruppo f/64, che aprirono la strada al linguaggio fotografico preciso e nitido della straight photography (fotografia diretta). Questo stravolgimento di stile diede una nuova spinta alla carriera di Weston, da cui nacquero fotografie dal realismo estremamente sensuale, caratterizzate da un equilibrio perfetto tra l'immobilità compositiva e una feroce intensità. Tramite i nudi, gli studi sulla natura e le molteplici vedute dello spettacolare paesaggio californiano, Weston si pose l'obiettivo di individuare "la vera sostanza e quintessenza della cosa stessa."
