Jacob A. Riis was a muckraking journalist, to whom fact was "the mightiest lever", and took up the camera only because it offered new firepower in his crusade for social justice. His images of the slums of New York have influenced every subsequent generation of photographers, while his insightful exploration of the problems of urban life continues to be educational for societies around the world. This book brings together an extensive collection of Riis's photographs and a detailed account of his extraordinary years with a camera. Alexander Alland, a photographer and an immigrant who fought for justice in the new land, chanced upon the references to picture-taking in Riis's autobiography. A five-year search finally led to the lost glass negatives and this book.
