Sykes's polemic against the American professoriate and its role in what he characterizes as the deterioration of higher education in the United States. Sykes argues that tenured faculty, insulated by the academy's incentive structures, have abandoned undergraduate teaching in favor of narrow research agendas, careerism, and self-interest. The book became one of the more widely discussed critiques of the university system in the late 1980s and helped establish Sykes as a conservative commentator on education and culture, a subject he returned to in subsequent works.
