A humorously written memoir of Clarence Day Jr. about his father Clarence 'Clare' Day Sr. Clarence portrays his father with comical and satirical colors who is a heavily burdened Wall Street broker.
The writings of Day introduce richer colors when revealing the life records (special occasions) in which he portrays highly comical attitude towards the family whence failing in convincing or receiving others up to his exaggerated standards (especially the other household members).
A bestseller of two times.
The book was written in the 1935 and is the base of the more known version, the non-musical Broadway story wrote by Lindsay Howard and Crouse Russel.
The Broadway version is actually still remembered for being the non-musical story represented in the Broadway area which has been running for the longest time. Other than the Broadway version, the book of Clarence Day Jr. was a source of inspiration also for several movies, the first was made in the 1947.
The book is still seen as a classical part of the American humour due to the colourful representation that the author gave of his family and their lifestyle. Even with this comic tendency the story is somehow touching and able to reach very lively or nostalgic levels during the narration.
Most known parts of the story are those that evoke into readers' minds the exact idea of the busy and somehow fun family lifestyle and that make people imagine the father of the author dealing with crazy encounters and annoying animals.
When published became a best seller very quickly and already in the 1935 (year of the publication) the book was commonly known and appreciated. what not many people know is that Clarence Day Jr., in order to test the reaction of readers, started to publish stories and episodes about his own life from the year 1930. This was possible thanks to the space that the author gained in a magazine of his area.
In fact Clarence Day Jr. was thinking about that project from several years when the book was finally published. The author was interested in writing and drawing since a young age and the good memory that he had of his childhood and of the time spent with the family made he start to feel the need of writing a book like that.
Critics are basically all positive and describe this work with amazing words such as: delightful, full of happiness, lively, fun and many others. But another fact that is commonly appreciated of this book, other than the fun and the good feelings that you receive from reading it, is the characterization of characters that seem to be real and realistic at the same time. Full rounded characters that you would be able to associate to people that you meet every day in your life.
Clarence Day's comic stories of his father, Clarence "Clare" Day Senior are taken from the "New Yorker" magazine. They portray a rambunctious, overburdened Wall Street broker who demands that everything from his family should be just so. The more he rails against his staff, his cook, his wife, his horse, salesmen, holidays, his children and the inability of the world to live up to his impossible standards, the more comical and lovable he becomes to his own family who love him despite it all. First published in 1936, shortly after his death, Day's book is a picture of New York upper-middle-class family life in the 1890s. The stories are filled with affectionate irony. Day's understated, matter-of-fact style underlines the comedy in everyday situations.
