E. M. Delafield was the nom de plume of Edmée Elizabeth Monica de la Pasture Dashwood (1890-1943), who produced more than forty volumes of fiction, plays, and essays over twenty-six years in the 1920s and '30s. However, her Provincial Lady series, first published for the weekly magazine Time and Tide, has proven to be her most celebrated work.

EM Delafield was the pen name of Elizabeth Monica Dashwood, born de la Pasture. Delafield is the latter anglicized. Her mother (Lady Clifford) was also a prolific novelist. EM Delafield had a number of French governesses who provided material for the Mademoiselle of Diary of a Provincial Lady.
