(Subject: Squadron/Signal Aviation) The company was set up in 1911, becoming the Société de Production des Aéroplanes Deperdussin (SPAD). In 1913 it went into administration but a consortium led by Louis Blériot bought up the the assets, naming the new company the Société Pour L'Aviation et ses Dérivés which allowed the retention of the acronym. Its most noteworthy fighter was the SPAD S.XIII, which first flew on 4th April, 1917. The S.XIII was flown by famous French fighter pilots such as Georges Guynemer and Rene Fonck, and also by Italian ace Francesco Baracca. Aces of the United States Army Air Service who flew the Spad XIII include Eddie Rickenbacker (America's leading World War I ace and Frank Luke.
