Written during the stagflation of the late 1970s, the text works through the failures of price fixing across modern industries, examining the 1970s Arab oil embargo, urban rent control laws, natural gas shortages and mandatory wage regulations. Reisman applies the deductive method of the Austrian School to argue that price ceilings paralyze the price coordination mechanism, generate artificial shortages and push mixed economies toward state control. The volume carries an introductory foreword by former United States Secretary of the Treasury William E. Simon, alongside bibliographic references, chapter notes and an analytical subject index. Advance commentary from Nobel laureate F. A. Hayek, William E. Simon and Henry Hazlitt appears on the rear jacket panel. George Reisman, born 1937, is an American economist and Professor Emeritus of Economics at Pepperdine University. A student of Ludwig von Mises and a close associate of Ayn Rand, he earned his doctorate in economics at New York University under Mises's supervision. The analytical chapters formulated here served as the core of his later treatise Capitalism: A Treatise on Economics, published in 1996, and the book is a primary-source statement of laissez-faire capitalism for students of political economy and institutional libraries.
