Front-cover: Beauty and the Beast, 1992-95 (detail)
It was said by the philosopher, David Hume, that Beauty is not in objects, but in the eye of the beholder. Nevertheless, whatever truth there is in this statement, Beauty is a function of not only human emotion, but also of order and as such cannot be perceived except in terms of objects. My aim, therefore, has been to create independant objects; not objectively like machines, but subjectively.
But the question arises as to whether Painting, as a totally independent object, can maintain the prestige which it has inherited from history; that is to say, as also a language of extraneous sensations and ideas like Poetry. ...
Art, however, is also a function of reason; ...
But either way great Painting involves a symbol of not only visual sensations and ideas, but also of Life. The Image of Beauty, therefore, can have two faces one of which is tragic; a condition which has made it an emotional extension of Religion, as well as Science, throughout the ages.
