Synopsis: In this book Nigel Scotland demonstrates that the various branches of Methodism made possible both the birth and subsequent development of agricultural trade unionism in the 1870's. The Methodist contribution to the origin of the agricultural labourers' protest was diverse. The experience of religious conversion amongst the Methodists helped to generate resolve and determination in agricultural workers. They were encouraged to demand better conditions of work and shorter working hours. Methodism also provided the labourer with many opportunities for reading, writing and public speaking as well as the experience of organising chapel business and worship.
