The book traces how steam colliers developed from early experimental vessels in the mid-19th century into the large commercial fleets that supplied coal to industrial Britain, particularly power stations, ports, and major cities. Hardcover. Etat : Fine. Etat de la jaquette : Fine. 1st Edition. The Steam Collier Fleets; J. A. MacRae & C. V. Waine; illustrated by C. V. Waine; Waine Research Publications, Albrighton UK, 1990. First printing. From the blurb Captain Jim MacRae spent most of his sea-going career aboard the Thames up-river colliers carrying coal to the London power stations from South Wales and the North East coal ports. As the collier fleets began to vanish one by one he set about preserving their history and that of the harbours at which they loaded and discharged. Charles Waine who had similar interests centered on the Irish Sea coasters and colliers joined him in the project to produce a companion volume to Steam Coasters & Short Sea Traders. With the untimely death of Captain MacRae it was left to Dr. Charles Waine to complete the project. This large format book, 226 pages measuring 297mm X 210mm is in fine condition in a fine dust jacket that is in a protective mylar wrap. This large volume may require additional postage.
