Throughout the centuries scholars and builders have returned time and again to descriptions of the Temple in religious and historical sources for the basis of its visual re~interpretation through the architectural vocabulary of their own age. The wealth of this tradition of historical re~creation of this sacred structure has been balanced by a less conscious assimilation of elements derived from the Temple into the designs of churches and synagogues. Both aspects point to a fundamental human need to return to the concept of the Temple of Jerusalem as exemplified by a sanctuary, a repository of divinity and an emblem of holiness. Helen Rosenau charts the evolution of the vision of the Temple from the earliest surviving pictorial representations on coins dating from the Bar Kochba revolt of AD. 132~135 to contemporary religious architecture. In between she draws on sources as diverse as recently excavated floor mosaics, medieval illuminated manuscripts, architectural treatises and Old Master paintings to piece together the evolution of how men have viewed the Temple, a spur to both devotion and aesthetic imagination. Over 160 reproductions document not only the breadth of Dr. Rosenau research but also the rich variety of a motif in which the demands of realism and structural practicality merge with those of religious vision and symbolism. vision of the Temple is a provocative and stimulating continuation of Dr. Rosenau lifelong study of the links between ethics and art, and the image of the Jerusalem Temple, whose descent she traces from the second century to the twentieth, reflects a passionate concern for the area where belief and architecture become inextricably entwined.
