[ ABOUT THE BOOK ] Riyadh Book by Anthony Guise | Riyadh, the capital of Saudi Arabia, is presented as both a modern metropolis and a city with a history extending back to its pre-Islamic settlement. The book describes the transformation of an oasis city into a centre of sophisticated planning and construction, with examples of modern architecture built largely during the preceding two decades. | Until about half a century ago, Riyadh remained a small walled city, roughly half a kilometre across, with narrow streets and earth-brick buildings. Its growth accelerated after King Abdul Aziz al Saud proclaimed his kingdom with Riyadh as its capital. New ministries were established, the population expanded, and diplomats arrived from Jiddah. Planning struggled to keep pace with this rapid development before shaping a city suited to its role as national capital and its Islamic Najdi setting. The account also highlights Riyadh's airport and its architectural significance. (MP). N° de réf. du vendeur Batch-FM811-VG-15911
