This extensive history not only tells the complete story of this forgotten Order, but sets it in context as a political, social, cultural and ceremonial constituent of the long departed world of viceregal Ireland. The book examines such themes as the changing criteria for selecting the Knights; the ceremonials of investiture and installation; the sky-blue robes and insignia; the infamous theft of the Irish Crown Jewels in 1907; the abolition of the link between the Order and the Church of Ireland; and, in fascinating detail, the political wrangling between the British and Irish governments over the fate of the Order after 1922; the attitude of the Irish government; the roles of King George V, the Home Office and the Dominions Office; Winston Churchill s attempts to reconstitute the Order at the height of the Second World War; and the post-war attempts of the Prime Minister of Northern Ireland to keep the Order alive --Naval and Military Press

Présentation de l'éditeur

For one hundred and forty years the Most Illustrious Order of Saint Patrick was the national honour of Ireland. Founded in 1783 in the aftermath of the granting of legislative independence to the Irish parliament, it disappeared into obscurity in the years after the partition of Ireland in 1922, until it was forgotten. With the death of Prince Henry, Duke of Gloucester, the last Knight of Saint Patrick in 1974, the Order effectively ceased to exist. The Order of St Patrick was instituted as the third of three national honours of the United Kingdom, joining the Order of the Garter (of England) and the Order of the Thistle (of Scotland). Initially a symbolic adjunct of Irish independence, it was used to recognise and reward loyal support to the government from Irish peers, and the Order became a prominent and coveted feature of the social world of the Anglo-Irish aristocracy.
