Given the dominant part that television now plays in our lives with the set in the comer having supplanted the fireplace as the focal point of many living rooms, and the latest happenings in the popular television programmes now the regular subject of innumerable conversations and discussions, a child growing up in the 1990s with satellite broadcasting and other high-tech developments, could be forgiven for thinking that "the box" has always been with us. But there are still enough people around who were there at the birth of television and who grew up with it. to be able to tell a much different story. For them, in an age when a sense of wonder came much easier than it does for the computer-minded children of today, the first time they saw TV was a landmark in their lives - comparable, perhaps, to those of an earlier generation who enjoyed their first ride in a motor-car. Early television sets were characterised by their elaborate wooden cabinets and tiny screens, broadcasting poor-quality black-and-white pictures which were always liable to disappear without warning - due either to some sort of technical hitch at the broadcasting end or because of the unreliable electronics of those first primitive sets. Nevertheless, in the early days, these limitations meant that both broadcasters and viewers shared something of a pioneering spirit. As an increasing number of people obtained a TV for the first time, evidenced by the sudden appearance of strange-looking aerials on the roofs of houses, so their technical knowledge of the sets improved and television producers in their turn became more ambitious and daring about the types of programme to be broadcast into people's homes.
