Paperback. Etat : Very Good. This England Books, Published 2003. Paperback, 100 pp.; landscape format, 22 x 28 cm; First Edition (softcover issue); illustrated in color throughout with Colin Carr's paintings and drawings, with occasional photographs, magazine covers, and newspaper clippings. In Very Good condition. Glossy illustrated paper covers with a Carr market scene in an oval vignette; light bumping increasing to edges and corners, and mild edge shelf wear. Binding tight; pages clean and unmarked. An appreciation of the Lincolnshire artist Colin Carr (1929-2002), compiled by Roy Faiers, editor of This England, and drawn from the more than a thousand Carr paintings held in the magazine's archives. Trained at Grimsby School of Art, Carr worked as a freelance illustrator of books, record sleeves, and greetings cards before becoming editor of Lincolnshire Life and art editor of This England, a post he held until his death, choosing to remain in Lincolnshire rather than move to the Cotswolds head office. His densely peopled watercolors of English village and market life, recurring black cat and village bobby included, are reproduced here alongside his verse and reminiscences of him. Among the episodes recounted is the 1994 theft of five Carr originals from a Cleethorpes framing shop, to which the artist responded by painting a "Carr Boot Sale" scene valuing the missing pictures at "Six Quid, the lot!" and presenting it to the shop's owner. Contents: Colin Carr, A Lincolnshire Legend; The Butterfly Blitz; The School Teacher; Cats; North Sea Rescue; Art Robbery; Happisburgh Lighthouse; The County Show; The Empty Chair; The Waiting Chair; The Country Bus; Country Characters (The Doctor; The Chemist; The Squire; The Clergyman; The Lacemaker; The Tailor; The Farmhand; The Poacher; The Shepherd; The Village Bobby; The Shopkeeper); The Little Shops of England; Old Lincolnshire Market Places (Alford; Boston; Sleaford; Lincoln; Grimsby); The Little Roads of England; The End of the Line; Funeral Address; Acknowledgements.
